In planning the new 27,000 square foot activities complex at Devil‘s Thumb Ranch Resort, the owner wanted a small building, adjacent to the large “Broadax Barn” that would be used for meetings, weddings, small receptions, and private dining. The original plan was to build a 27’x 30’ building with the walls mostly windows and incorporate reclaimed hand hewn beams into the design.

When they asked for my advice as to how best design the building to look authentic with reclaimed beams, I suggested a small mortise and tenon timber frame house. The owner liked the idea and allowed me to design and build a custom timber frame using reclaimed hand hewn beams that I acquired from several dismantled structures.

The Timber House is one of my favorite buildings. It has a very heavy concentration of huge hand hewn beams in a small building. A deck with awesome mountain views connects the Timber House to the Broadax Barn for wedding receptions, meetings, and so on.

A small timber frame building such as this would be ideal as a home office, artist studio, great room or timber frame guest house. A small timber frame building can be attached to your existing home or incorporated into your next building project.
